PATERSON, NJ- Just over a month after voters went to the polls to elect a new mayor and three members of the city council, some community stakeholders spent part of their day Tuesday discussing ways to change the conversation about how the various sections of Paterson are recognized.

“Ward had a negative connotation,” Scott Pruiksma of The Life Christian Church said opening one of several attendee driven discussions taking place at Creative Paterson’s “Call to Collaboration.”

“Don’t you think it’s time for a change,” he asked, his question met with nodding heads.

Irma Gorham, executive director of the Paterson Housing Authority, joined the conversation suggesting its not the boundaries of the wards that need to change, but instead how they are referred to, such as Newark’s Ironbound District.

“That sounds more appealing than Ward 4” Pruiksma offered.

With promises to continue the discussions after the two-day conference ended Pruiksma with a note of confidence saying that “people are open and ready for positive cultural change.”
