PATERSON, NJ -  A third-alarm fire at 187 North First Street took the life of one person and left five others inside the home injured Saturday, according to Paterson Fire Chief Brian McDermott. Two firefighters were also treated for smoke inhalation as a result of their efforts to remove victims from the home.

“It’s a very sad day here in Paterson,” McDermott said before encouraging people to go home and check their smoke detectors.

Mayor Andre Sayegh commended first responders for their quick response that led to the containment of the fire to one home.
