PATERSON, NJ - Councilman-At-Large Flavio Rivera will preside over the Paterson City Council for the next 12 months, serving as the body’s president. Councilwoman-At-Large Dr. Lillisa Mimms will serve as vice-president.

Both were selected to serve in the leadership positions by their colleagues unanimously, 6-0, with First Ward Councilman Michael Jackson absent and the Second and Third Ward seats sitting vacant. Rivera and Mimms take over for Councilwoman Maritza Davilla and Councilman Mike Jackson who served in the top two spots for the past two years.

First elected in 2018, Rivera will have his work cut out for him as the body, known to be rambunctious at times, started their first meeting of the new session arguing over motion, points of order, and other parliamentary procedures.

As chair of the Finance Committee, Rivera has shown an acumen for understanding the nuances of the city’s finances, and a penchant for doing his “due diligence” when it comes to spending decisions.

On Tuesday, Rivera showed that he is willing to work with Mayor Andre Sayegh in efforts to bring redevelopment to Paterson with his key affirmative vote in support of an ordinance allowing the city to guarantee up to $38 million worth of debt issued by the Passaic County Improvement Authority for the construction of a world-class visitor center, 24,000 sf community center, and 270 car parking garage to the area surrounding the Paterson Great Falls.

“Paterson is bigger than our problems,” Rivera said, sharing his desire to see decision makers and community leaders band together. “This job is not about a person, it's about moving the city forward.”

Newly installed Council Vice President Mimms followed up Rivera’s comments with her own brief remarks that concluded with “let’s continue to make a better Paterson, let’s do it together.”
