Here are some highlights provided by the United Way of Passaic County's Financial Empowerment Zone at PCCC:

  •  Tax preparers are IRS trained and have already completed almost 100 returns in the first week. Local residents save money by having their taxes done for free.
  • Many clients qualify for tax credits and have received big refund checks. Some clients return with their 2010 tax information so that prior years can be filed.
  • The on-site Benefits Specialist on Tuesdays and Wednesdays help clients find and enroll in government and private programs that help pay for prescription drugs, utilities, meals, college, healthcare and other needs
  • FEZ tax preparers need to pass rigorous IRS tests to work at the site. This is not the case with all preparers, even with those that you pay.
  • No income limits when getting taxes prepared by AARP volunteers. Anyone can have their taxes done for free except business returns, those with rental properties, or a few other situations that are out of scope.
  • Get help preparing FAFSA applications for federal student aid. Also education tax credits help offset the costs of college. Both the American Opportunity and the Lifetime Learning Credits are credits that can reduce your federal income tax.
  • If you used the FEZ service last year, all your information will be in our system and filing again this year will be much faster and easier.
  • Make an appointment and avoid a long wait at a walk in center. You can make the appointment at  or call either 211 or 972-279-8900. Stop by the FEZ site to book an appointment. We take walk-ins if we have room.
  • We file all returns electronically.  When you use a paper return, it takes longer to process but when you e-file, you can get your money in as little as 10 days.
  • We are also open on Saturdays at the United Way office on 20 Mill Street in Paterson.
