Goow v. Akhtaruzzaman Ruling Due This Afternoon

PATERSON, NJ - Superior Court Judge Thomas Brogan is scheduled to issue his ruling on Aslon Goow's bid to have Councilman Mohammed Akhtaruzzaman removed from office at 2 pm today.

Goow, a 12-year incumbent who lost to Akhtaruzzaman in this year's 2nd Ward council election, has argued his opponent did not live in Paterson for a year before the election, as required by law. Goow's attorney, Michael DeMarco, used various documents to make that case, including Akhtaruzzaman's application for disaster relief in September 2011 that listed his address as being in Totowa.

Akhtaruzzaman has testified that he moved from Totowa to Paterson in January 2011, leaving his family behind for six months. Akhtaruzzaman has said the Totowa address on the emergency relief application resulted from a misunderstanding.

The ruling had been scheduled for last Friday, but was delayed because of a scheduling issue.
