CLIFTON, NJ – The Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders joined with members of the Dutch Hill Residents Association and the Daughters of the American Revolution to break ground on the restoration and rehabilitation fo the historic Westervelt-Vanderhoef House in Clifton on Monday.

The house, along with the surrounding property, was purchased by the Passaic County Park Commission for the purpose of serving as public parkland and is representative of early Dutch settlement in Passaic County beginning in 1609, when Dutch settlers first established agricultural communities in the northeast region of North America. The structure was altered throughout the nineteenth century to accommodate changing styles and a growing family.

“The Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders are taking another step in preserving the rich history of our County and preserving and repurposing the historic Westervelt-Vanderhoef House for modern use as office space for the Departments of Parks and Recreation and Cultural and Historic Affairs, as well as community meeting space for our residents,” stated Freeholder Theodore “TJ” Best, Chairman of the Public Works and Buildings and Grounds Committee. “This Board remains committed to protecting Passaic County’s historic resources and making the Passaic County Park System the best in New Jersey and the region.”

“Over the last two years, the Board has invested millions of dollars to restore and rehabilitate Weasel Brook Park and the Westervelt-Vanderhoef House,” stated Passaic County Freeholder Bruce James. “In addition to this project, the County has secured a $600,000 Green Acres grant award to fund the Weasel Brook Park Phase II Improvement Project that will restore the walking paths and install decorative lighting. In all, this Board has invested almost $5 million dollars in Weasel Brook Park to transform it into premier parkland in New Jersey.”
