PATERSON, NJ - Paterson police arrested a 29-year-old Fort Lee man Sunday after he allegedly threatened the Uber driver that had transported him from Palisades Park with a handgun.
According to Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale, the female driver reported that during the travel she observed that her passenger, later identified as Andrew Mendez, was in possession of a black handgun. Mendez, the driver said, indicated that the weapon was “for his protection” once he arrived in Paterson.
Upon arrival at Pearl Street and Rosa Parks Blvd the suspect exited the vehicle and then reentered. At this point, the driver said, the suspect asked to perform a sex act with him, an offer she refused. “It’s either that or your life,” the suspect reportedly threatened.
The victim then told the driver told Mendez she needed something to drink first, and, with his agreement, exited the vehicle and drove to a store at 104 Park Avenue where she called the police at approximately 5:53 p.m.
Upon arrival, patrol units observed the vehicle, as well as Mendez inside. Mendez was removed from the vehicle, arrested without any further incident, and charged with a series of crimes including weapon offenses, making terroristic threats, and aggravated assault.
The weapon, a 9mm Lady K model, was found to contain one blank round and no live rounds.
