PATERSON, NJ - Mayor Jeffrey Jones traveled to Wood-Ridge in Bergen County on Wednesday to attend a campaign event for Rep. Steve Rothman that featured an appearnce by President Barak Obama's senior advisor David Axelrod.

Jones said in a story on PolitickerNJ.com that his presence at the event should not be seen as an endorsement of Rothman in the bitter congressional primary with former Paterson mayor, Rep. Bill Pascrell. Jones indicated he was drawn by Axelrod.

Most elected officials from Paterson, including many of Jones' allies, have backed Pascrell in the race, saying it was important to the city's future that it have a hometown connection in Paterson. But Jones has refused to make a publice endorsement of either candidate.

It's been clear that Jones does not share others' enthusiasm for Pascrell. Last month, Jones launched an internal municipal inquiry involving the filming of a Pascrell campaign commercial. In that instance, Jones said a city street was closed without the requiste permit and city police officers were assigned to the event without proper authorization.
