PATERSON, NJ - A 33-year-old resident of N. 11th Street was wounded early Wednesday morning when two men broke into his apartment in what authorities are calling an attempted robbery.

The victim and a female companion were home at about 12:30 am when they heard someone break into the second-floor apartment by kicking in the door, said Sgt. Patrick Murray, head of Paterson's Cease Fire unit.

The man and the woman quickly locked themselves in the bedroom, Murray said, and the intruders attempted to kick in that door as well.  Eventually, one of the intruders fired a single shot through the bedroom door that wounded the victim, he said. The two suspects then fled, apparently without taking anything, according to police.

The victim is in stable condition at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center.

The incident was Paterson's 23 non-fatal shooting of 2012, Murray said. So far, 32 people have been wounded and three killed in city shootings this year.

Authorities are asking that anyone with information on the crime call the Cease Fire unit at 973-321-1342.
