New Jersey is the best state to be a teacher, according to a new study by Zippia.com, a recruiting website.

How did the Garden State land at the top of the rankings?

To determine the best states for teachers, Zippia examined out where the teaching jobs are and how well they are paid via information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’s Occupational Employment Statistics for 2015:

  • Location quotient (A measure of how common a job is in a given state.)
  • Average annual salary
  • Average annual salary for entry level work
  • Average annual salary for experienced professionals

To make all the salary numbers more apples-to-apples across states, Zippia compared salary data relative to each state’s cost of living from MIT’s living wage index. Thus, while the average salary for Teachers in California is $72,360 and the average salary in Illinois is only $59,680, the Illinois salary actually goes further in paying for life’s essentials.

New Jersey Numbers:
Total Teaching Jobs: 46,440
Average Annual Salary: $68,100
Average Entry Level Salary: $49,800
Average Experienced Salary: $96,290
