PATERSON, NJ - Tuesday's deadline passed with none of the candidates in the city's 2nd Ward special election filing written objections to opponents' nominating petitions.

Under a compressed election schedule, City Clerk Jane Williams-Warren is supposed to certify the petitions by 4 pm on Wednesday, draw ballot positions on Thursday and certify the candidacies on Friday.

For now there are five candidates vying for the seat that became vacant when Aslon Goow's successful lawsuit resulted in the nullification of Mohammed Akhtaruzzaman victory in the May election on the grounds that his voter registration was invalid.

The field is composed of Akhtaruzzaman, Goow and Sonia Torres - the top three voter-getters last May - along with two members of the Bengali community, Zalal Uddin and Maidul Islam.
