PATERSON, NJ - Passaic County is considering selling the county jail on Main Street as part of a plan to send inmates to Bergen and Essex counties, according to a story on northjersey.com.
Under the proposal, Passaic would send about 60 percent of its 1,000 inmates to Essex County's jail and the rest to the Bergen County jail, the story said.
The story said Passaic County would save millions on the deal. Officials hope to work out the details of the plan by September.
The sale of the jail could take help city government by converting a property that's tax exempt into one that would generate property taxes for the cash-strapped city.
