PATERSON, NJ – The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office on Monday arrested man who had been a gym teacher at Paterson Catholic High School and charged him with sexual assault against a former student.
Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes announced the arrest of 37-year-old Scott Alfred Handel at his home in Hewitt, NJ.
Handel was charged with one count of sexual assault, a second-degree crime, one count of endangering the welfare of a child, a second-degree crime, and one count of criminal sexual contact, a fourth-degree crime.
Handel allegedly assaulted the now 19-year-old victim in June 2010, when she was a 17-year-old junior at the high school, according to the prosecutor’s press release.
The Roman Catholic Dioceses of Paterson closed the school in 2010.
The second-degree charges against Handel each carry a maximum sentence of 10 ten years in New Jersey State Prison, according to the prosecutor’s office. The fourth degree offense carries a maximum sentence of eighteen months.
