PATERSON, NJ - Members of the Paterson Police Department took swift action Thursday when one, Detective Mustafa Dombayci, reported observing a man, later identified as Mark Champion, 21, place a handgun in a bag that was attached to his body.

According to Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale, Dombayci was on patrol in the area of the 17th Avenue and East 28th Street at approximately 8:30 p.m., when he, and three other members of the Street Crime Unit saw Champion walking near the intersection.

After advising the other detectives of the presence of the firearm, the four immediately approached the suspect and were able to secure the weapon before taking him into custody without incident.
