PATERSON, NJ – Mayor Andre Sayegh today promoted William R. “Billy” Rodriguez as director of the Department of Public Works (DPW) in his new administration. Rodriguez is a lifelong Paterson resident who began working with the DPW in 1997.

“I don’t think the importance of this role to the welfare of our city can be overstated,” said Mayor Sayegh. “Tapping into the power of Paterson requires having clean streets and dependable roads. I trust Billy to get these and other important jobs done because he knows Paterson and he knows how to deliver public services in ways that very few of us can understand them. I’m very much looking forward to working with him.”

“I’m grateful to Mayor Sayegh for his confidence in me in leading the Public Works Department,” said Rodriguez. “The Mayor and I share the belief that the delivery of public services has an enormous impact on residents’ perceptions of their municipal government. I’m going to do my best to give Patersonians every reason to believe their city government is working for them.”

Rodriguez added that anything the DPW accomplishes is a team effort, but he is particularly proud of the way the DPW responded to last winter’s numerous snowstorms, and how they made sure that city streets were cleared within 24 hours of a storm. He and his wife, Catherine, live in Paterson’s 2nd Ward with their four children.

Rodriguez has been the Paterson DPW deputy director since May 2017 and has overseen all departmental duties as well as the city’s capital projects. From 2005 to 2017, Rodriguez served as the supervisor for the city’s streets and roads, and his duties included completing work orders, inspecting the city’s fleet of maintenance vehicles as well as managing the city’s road maintenance employees and budget. Rodriguez also has extensive experience in overseeing and working in the city’s street cleaning and sanitation collection operations.

Rodriguez has completed the Rutgers University Center for Government Services’ coursework for public works manager and clean communities coordinator certifications. He has also completed N.J. Supervisory Empowering Performance training at the County College of Morris in Randolph, N.J.

Former DPW Director Manny Ojeda is now deputy director in accordance with state civil service regulations.
