PATERSON, NJ - Since October dozens of members of the Paterson Police Department have added a new accessory to their dress blues and on-duty uniforms, facial hair. And while it would be easy to think that the decision to do so has something to do with the early onslaught of winter temperatures we’re experiencing, the reality is their doing it for a much more noble reason: children.
More specifically, participants in the effort each donated $300, raising a total of $33,000 for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, to break from the usual protocol of being clean-shaven while on the job.
Led by Detective David D’Arco, himself diagnosed with cancer in his eye in 2012, and supported by PBA Local 1 and the Superior Officers' Association, the recipients of the funding were picked because “everyone agrees on helping children.”
