PATERSON, NJ - Members of the Paterson Police Department’s Street Crime Unit recovered two loaded weapons in separate operations Friday and Saturday, Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale announced.

According to Speziale, at approximately 11:55 p.m. Friday Detectives William Hermann and Mustafa Dombayci responded to the area of 16th Avenue and East 18th Street on a report of an individual armed with a firearm. Upon arrival in the area detectives, along with Officer James Iandoli of the Emergency Response Team, conducted an investigation in the area, but did not locate an armed suspect. As they searched the area a loaded 12 Gauge shotgun with the serial number defaced was found inside a duffle bag near a residence.

Just over an hour later Detectives Yamil Pimienta and Mohammad Bashir were in the area of Montgomery Park when they observed a crowd of approximately 15 individuals alongside the park as well as a number of double-parked vehicles playing loud music.

As the Detectives exited their vehicle, along with assisting patrol units, they observed several individuals consuming alcohol, and approached to issue the appropriate city ordinance violations.

While Detectives Pimienta and Bashir approached one individual, later identified as Rodney Alston, Speziale reported, Alston allegedly turned away and attempted to conceal an object in the front pocket of a hooded sweatshirt he was wearing. During the subsequent investigation, a loaded SCCY 9mm handgun was recovered without further incident.

Alston was transported to Paterson Police Headquarters for processing and will be detained at the Passaic County Jail pending an initial judicial hearing.

Both recovered weapons will be submitted to the New Jersey State Police Ballistics Laboratory for further examination.
