Dear Editor,

Today I witnessed the awesome, solemn and peaceful transfer of power from Governor Chris Christie to Governor Phil Murphy thanks to the generous invitation of Assemblyman Benjie Wimberly.

Indeed, this was my first State of New Jersey Governor's inauguration. It was a thrill and an honor to be in attendance.  These are the days that you can truly say that you witnessed history.

Inaugurations are moments that bind the past, present and future together. As President Kennedy once said, "we celebrate not the victory of party but the celebration of freedom.”

The dawn of any new administration, whether it be Democratic or Republican,  should be viewed as an opportunity to start anew the bonds of bipartisanship.

Lincoln once said, " charity to all, malice to none.” This sentiment should be shared by all. We are one state with common goals.

As we prepare for our own inauguration in Paterson this July 1st, let us come together as one regardless of our race, ethnicity or religion and support the next mayor.

Sincerely,

Wayne Witherspoon
