PATERSON, NJ- A 46-year-old Orlando man has been arrested in connection with the road fatality of a Newark man in a multi-car crash on Wednesday.
According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief Troy Oswald, an investigation into the accident that took place at approximately 9:34 p.m. on January 2 at the intersection of 18th Avenue and East 24th Street revealed that Alvin Mootoo, 46, driving a Buick Encore, disregarded a stop sign and struck a silver 2008 Honda Accord. Mootoo’s vehicle was then pushed into 1999 Honda Accord which was occupied and parked at the time.
The deceased, Pena Mesa, 31, Newark, was standing outside of the 1999 Honda Accord speaking to the driver, when it was struck and sustained serious injuries. Mesa was transported to Saint Joseph’s Hospital for treatment by Paterson Fire Department EMS where he was pronounced deceased a short time later. The drivers of both Accords sustained minor injuries and were treated at the hospital and released.
Mootoo is charged with Death by Auto within 1000 Feet of School Property, First Degree; and Strict Liability Death by Auto, Third Degree.
