Serial Rapist? Police Say Sexual Assault Suspect May Have Had Other Victims

PATERSON, NJ – City detectives are trying to determine whether a 28-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting two women during the past six weeks had preyed upon others.

Daniel Lopez of Spring Street was arrested on Thursday and charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault and two weapons offenses, said Lt. Richard Reyes.

Authorities say the first attack happened on November 16, when a 37-year-old woman told police that she was lured into a man’s Spring Street apartment, where he forced her to perform sexual acts with him.

The second attack happened on December 19, police said. Authorities learned of that incident when a 31-year-old woman went to Hackensack University Medical Center for treatment. The woman told detectives that a man lured her into a Spring Street apartment and forced her to perform sexual acts with him.

Reyes declined to provide details on how the suspect lured the women into the apartment and what role – if any – the weapon played in the attacks to avoid compromising the ongoing investigation.

“It is believed that Lopez may have had other victims,’’ said a press release issued by Reyes.

Authorities are asking anyone with information on the case to contact Detective Richie Martinez of the Paterson Police Detective Bureau at (973) 321-1120.
