PATERSON, NJ - Minutes before dismissal time, a shooting erupted outside School 21 on Wednesday afternoon, prompting education officials to place the building on lockdown for about 20 minutes, police said.
No one was wounded in the incident, which happened at about 3 pm at the corner of 10th and Madison avenues, according to authorities. Some bullets apparently struck a car in the area, but none of the occupants were hit, police said.
"It had nothing to do with School 21,'' Capt. Heriberto Rodriguez said of the shooting. So far, no one has been arrrested, he said.
As police descended on the scene, school officials kept students and stafff inside the building beyond the normal dismissal time, officials said.
"We waited until the police gave us all the all-clear,'' said Paterson Public Schools security director James Smith. That took about 20 minutes, he said. "Once we received that, we were able to allow them to begin dismissal.''
