WAYNE, NJ- The precision of well over 1000 police officers coming to attention was a sad reminder of the all too frequent line of duty deaths the profession faces on an annual basis.

According  to “Officer Down Memorial Page”, 135 law enforcement officers lost their lives on duty in 2017.

The pipes and drums played in unison, honor guards raised their flags, a New Jersey State Police helicopter performed a ceremonial flyover, and police radios blared a last call for badge number 4649, all part of the heart wrenching send off of well respected Paterson Police Officer Tamby Yagan.

Officer Yagan, 41, a 14-year veteran of the Paterson Police Department, lost his life on Sunday after being involved in a car accident while driving a police cruiser along Getty Avenue. By all accounts a trusted and much loved community servant, Yagan leaves behind a young son.

The funeral took place at the Circassian Benevolent Association in Wayne on Tuesday.

In a statement on Monday Congressman Bill Pascrell said that he joined “the brotherhood of officers in the Police Department and the city of Paterson in grieving for Officer Yagan.”

Paterson FMBA Local 2 President Jerry Behnke was on hand for the funeral along with nearly 100 members of the Paterson Fire Department. “When a police officer loses his life we feel it deeply,” Behnke said.

“Law enforcement and fire service professionals put their lives on the line every day to protect the communities we serve, Officer Yamby exemplified everything that is special about the proud men and women of the Paterson Police Department. While we’ll miss his him we’ll do our best to honor his service every day.”
