PATERSON, NJ- For nearly three hours the crowd was more electric than the lightning streaks that darted across the sky above. When the thunder rolled the sea of yellow shouted over it. As the rain came down harder the throngs of Colombia soccer supporters grew.

At least 1,000 Colombian soccer fans gathered along 21st Ave to watch their nation’s beloved soccer team take on England in the Round of 16 World Cup match.

The only thing that dampened the spirits of the enthusiastic crowd that spent the majority of the match beating drums, chanting, and shouting was the heartbreaking ending which saw England best Colombia in a penalty shootout.

Organizers of the event, including Board of Education Commissioner Manny Martinez, Jr. and 6th Ward community activist Al Abdelaziz reveled in the success of the gathering both vowing “there’s more of this to come.”
