PATERSON, NJ - A Paterson neighborhood is in shock Friday as law enforcement officials continue investigating the circumstances of a suspected domestic violence incident which led to the shooting death of a 31-year-old pregnant woman.
The incident, officially announced by Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief Ibrahim Baycora Friday morning, unfolded at approximately 1:37 p.m. Thursday, when police officers responded to the area of 5 Christina Place on calls of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, the officers discovered one female victim, who remains officially identified only as R.L., who had suffered apparent gunshot wounds. While at the hospital, the victim delivered her child, however she succumbed to her wounds and was pronounced deceased shortly after the delivery. The baby is healthy and currently admitted in stable condition.
“My heart is very heavy,” Mayor Andre Sayegh following the incident. “A baby is born without a mother. This is an unimaginable tragedy. Please pray for the grieving family.”
