PATERSON, NJ -  After a meeting that dragged on for five hours, the city council on December 21 did not take a vote a retirement package for Police Chief James Wittig,

The meeting went so long that the council had not gotten to the resolution on Wittig by midnight. The council has a policy of not voting on items after 12:00 am Instead, the council will hold a special meeting at 3 pm on December 29 to address the Wittig severance deal as well as several other items.

According to a preliminary draft of the agreement, Wittig would receive a $343,000 severance payment, plus a series of retroactive salary increases that would boost his pension by almost $40,000.
