On Friday, 3/17, at approximately 10:40 p.m., Paterson Police patrol units, along with Detectives, responded to the area of Market and East 31 Streets on a report of a person shot. On arrival, officers located an apparent crime scene, and were advised by witnesses that a shooting victim had been placed in a private vehicle, and taken to the hospital. A short time later, the victim arrived at Saint Joseph’s Regional Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the leg. Officers at the scene quickly began gathering information, which included an account that the suspects had fled the scene in a blue Acura sedan. A N.J. license plate was also provided to patrol officers, who immediately had it broadcast to all personnel. Within minutes, Officer Cesar Heyaime advised that he was following the vehicle westbound on Route 80, and that the vehicle was exiting on Squirrelwood Road and heading back in the direction of Paterson. Officer Hayaime, along with back-up officers and Detectives conducted a felony stop of that vehicle on the exit ramp. Three occupants of that vehicle were detained without incident. As a result of the follow-up investigation by Detective Sergeant Anthony Hyatt, and Detectives Christopher Ravallese and Joehan Suarez of the Ceasefire Unit, 2 suspects were charged as alleged actors in this incident. A third occupant of the vehicle was released as a result of the follow-up investigation by Detectives. (Captain PMurray: “ Without the decisive action taken by patrol officers and Detectives at the initial scene, and the gathering and broadcast of crucial information, which resulted in Officer Heyaime’s locating the suspect vehicle, the prompt apprehension of these individuals would not have been possible”.

Your Mental Health Deserves a Tune Up

June 8, 2018

Dear Editor:

For a long time mental illness has been "masked" with drug, alcohol, sex, and others.

The climbing rate of the act of suicide, including one in our very own backyard earlier this week, shows that we have to fight harder and collectively in reducing the stigma.

Sincerely,

Sharrieff Bugg
