Woman Beaten During Attempted Rape Near West Side Park

PATERSON, NJ - Authorities are looking for a man who attempted to rape a 54-year-old woman who was walking near West Side Park at 7 am Sunday morning.

The victim, a Woodland Park resident, said her attacker threatrened to rape her and then dragged her into the park, said Lt. Ronald Humphrey. The suspect beat the woman as she resisted the rape, he said. Eventually, the attacker ran off and the victim sought help at a nearby house. She was treated for her injuries and released from St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, police said.

"We're looking for help from the public on this,'' Humphrey said.

The victim described her attacker as a Hispanic man in his 20s, five feet six inches tall, about 130 pounds, with black hair and a medium complexion, police said. Anyone with information should call the Paterson Major Crimes unit at 973-321-1120.

Police say they know of no similar assaults in the area.
