PATERSON, NJ - An 18-year-old woman walking with family members and a small child was struck in the hip by what is believed to be stray gunfire on Saturday night.
According to Lt. Patrick Murray, the woman was hit shortly before 9:30 p.m. while walking in the area of North Main and Arch streets. Police do not believe that the woman, a city resident, was the intended target of the shooting. She is in stable condition at St. Joseph's Medical Center.
"The victim was walking with two family members and a small child when they heard what they believed to be gunshots being fired, at which time they attempted to leave the area on foot. While attempting to leave the area, the victim was struck by an apparent stray round," Murray said.
Detectives are conducting interviews and reviewing area surveillance footage. Detectives are asking the public for assistance, and urge anyone with information to contact detectives Carlos Charon or Rick Ferreira of the Paterson Police Ceasefire Unit at (973) 321-1342.
