Our customer story begins with a young girl being raised by her uncle in Paterson. The girl was attending a private Catholic school when her uncle suddenly passed away. Unable to settle fees owed, the school refused to release the girl's academic records. Without being able to get a diploma, our customer was 18 and on food stamps, unable to imagine a path forward. She was then referred to the One-Stop and youth counselor Kristine Labita.
"Having the opportunity to watch her grow up as a student and a person, was so rewarding to me," said Labita. The customer earned money while working at the One-Stop performing clerical duties which provided her with confidence and job experience. She was later referred to a partner of the One-Stop, Youth Corp, where she became an exemplary student.
She received her high school equivalency diploma from Youth Corp, while also working and earning money and training at a hospital as a Physical Therapist. The client was such a phenomenal student, that she earned a full scholarship to Fairleigh Dickinson University and her work experience as a Physical Therapist gave her a career path to pursue.
"I came here everyday," said the customer. " I was so appreciative of everything that they did for me." The young girl is now a Biology major at Farleigh Dickinson with dreams of one day becoming a Physical Therapist.
