New Jersey Symphony Orchestra: Hough Plays Rachmaninoff

XIAN ZHANG conductor
STEPHEN HOUGH piano
NEW JERSEY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Spend an evening with two Russian masters! Flowing melody awaits in Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise, while Stephen Hough—“one of the greatest living pianists” (The Times of London)—brings virtuosic fireworks to the composer’s kaleidoscopic Rhapsody. Prokofiev’s Sixth, a personal favorite of Xian Zhang’s, is a poignant postwar elegy.

RACHMANINOFF Vocalise
Soothing and searching, the Vocalise theme has been arranged for everything from voice to double bass.

RACHMANINOFF Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
Quicksilver with mesmerizing virtuosity; best known for one its lush, yearning themes, heard in numerous film soundtracks.

PROKOFIEV Symphony No. 6 (NJSO Premiere)
Banned by Stalin, this heartfelt tribute to those lost in World War II abounds in Russian soul.
