Washington's Encampment

The Dey Mansion is hosting an encampment in commemoration of General George Washington's visit to the Preakness Valley.

During October of 1780, General George Washington and his troops were encamped at the Dey Mansion, home of Colonel Theunis Dey, as well as the surrounding area following a visit with the French Army. The Dey Mansion offered abundant food and a safe haven for the Continental Army.

Come and learn what life was like as a soldier during the American Revolution. Watch soldiers cleaning their muskets while women prepare meals. Some officers may be drilling with their men while others plan for battle or play cards. Special appearances will be made by New Jersey’s local militia. The day will be filled with 18th century games, music, demonstrations and crafters.

Self-guided tours of the Mansion will be offered. Admission into the Mansion will be $5.00 per person. Children, 11 years of age and under, are free. Parking and outdoor activities are free to the public.

In my community, Paterson, there are nearly a dozen powerful, positive and newsworthy events every day, but sometimes the gravity of the bad news give us considerable pause. We aren’t able to celebrate those things that make us great due to some warped respect for tragedy.

Paterson, a city having a decided renaissance, has a sullied reputation for things that have actually occurred in ...

On the Other Side of the Border

The children kept hugging us. They just wanted hugs. They wanted to be seen, to be loved, to feel safe. It’s odd — we teach our children to not talk to strangers, and yet when we entered the Shelter de Leona Vicario they ran to us, grabbed our hands, and wanted to play. My Spanish is limited and their English was non-existent, but they kept telling us their names and ...

It took me a few days to actually begin to process what took place on Election Day.

Property Taxes in New Jersey: Still an Ongoing Issue

Over half of Garden State property tax bills go toward educating the state's nearly 1.4 million public school students.

But the average taxpayers in some ...
