Zinovia “Zina” Spezakis is a mother, environmentalist and democrat who is running for Congress in New Jersey’s ninth congressional district. Her congressional campaign has been privileged to have been endorsed by various progressive organizations, including Brand New Congress, Our Revolution New Jersey and several Sunrise Movement chapters.
Over the last several weeks, her campaign has called and emailed Representative Bill Pascrell’s office numerous times to ask if the congressman would debate issues that are critical to our community, such as the climate crisis and healthcare. So far, there has been no response to those requests.
“Everywhere I go in Hudson, Passaic, and Bergen counties, I hear from voters who are concerned that Representative Pascrell has not held an in-person public town hall in years and has not participated in a debate since 2012” said Spezakis. She added “our elected officials should aim to facilitate more conversations between community leaders, not less.”
We believe that in a democracy, a fair and open exchange of ideas to solutions to critical issues is healthy. Voters deserve to know what each candidate stands for, whether they take corporate donations and how they would deal with the critical issues such as the climate crisis, a broken healthcare system and social, environment, and economic justice. A debate between the two major candidates in this race will allow voters to understand their differences in policy and help them decide who they want as their representative.
