PATERSON, NJ - Two months to the day that Kevin Lewis, 28, was gunned down and killed in the area of 271 Summer Street, an arrest has been made, according to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief Troy Oswald.
In a statement issued Saturday the pair of law enforcement officials announced that Ramon “Lavar” Belfield, was apprehended on at approximately 8:02 p.m. Friday and charged with Murder, first degree; Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, second degree; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Second degree; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, first degree, and Certain Persons not to Possess Firearms, second degree.
As previously reported, on the night of the incident members of the Paterson Police Department responded to shots fired at approximately 10:20 p.m. and, once on scene, found Lewis lying in the street unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite emergency surgery St. Joseph’s University Medical Center Lewis died from his wounds at approximately 5:15 a.m.
The investigation revealed that there had been an ongoing dispute between the victim and Belfield, and while they were hanging out with a larger group of people on the night of the incident an argument ensued and Belfield took out a handgun and opened fire on Lewis.
