PATERSON, NJ - A 19-year-old Paterson man has been arrested in connection with the November 4 shooting death of Niyam Deloatch, 20, Prospect Park.

According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief Troy Oswald, Malachi Oji, turned himself in at Paterson Police Headquarters on Friday and was subsequently charged with murder and weapons charges.

As previously reported, the afternoon incident took place in the area of North 1st Street and Haledon Avenue. The subsequent investigation revealed that Oji was driving in his vehicle in the area of Haledon Avenue with two other men, when they saw Deloatch. At that time Oji and the two other men started to approach Deloatch on foot when one of the other men brandished a handgun. While the third man refused to participate and left the scene on foot, Oji and the armed suspect are said to have approached Deloatch and opened fire before fleeing.
