PATERSON, NJ - A Paterson man will spend 25 years behind bars for sexually assaulting a nine-year-old child whom he was babysitting, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes announced Wednesday.
The sentencing against Elias Cano, 24, originally arrested on August 10, 2018 after an investigation conducted by the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit was handed down by the Honorable Sohail Mohammed, a Judge of the Superior Court.
During the October trial, the State presented the victim’s forensic video interview regarding Cano’s sexual abuse of her, as well as live testimony from the victim, the victim’s mother, and members of the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit who were involved in the investigation of this matter. Cano was convicted of Aggravated Sexual Assault, First Degree, Sexual Assault, Second Degree, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Second Degree by a jury on October 31.
Cano’s conviction of the most serious crime required the imposition of enhanced punishment for his attack on a victim who is less than thirteen-years old. Cano will not be eligible for parole and will be subject to parole supervision for life and Megan’s Law registration requirements upon release.
