PATERSON, NJ - A traffic stop turned violent Friday when the driver of an unregistered vehicle became combative after being pulled over by a Passaic County Sheriff's Officer.

According to Sheriff Richard Berdnik, PCSO Officer Troy Lewis observed a black Kia Optimum commit a motor vehicle infraction at the intersection of East 28th Street& 15th Avenue at approximately 6:45 p.m. After pulling the vehicle over, and finding it to be unregistered, Lewis exited his vehicle while the suspect, identified as Marquis Wedderburn, 21, did the same.

Wedderburn is said to have attempted to walk away from the stop, and, after refusing Lewis’ command to stop, became began to scuffle with the officer, striking him several times in the chest. Lewis was able to subdue the suspect and place him under arrest at which point Wedderburn threatened that he would “see (Lewis) soon once he is released.”
