PATERSON, NJ - Investigators are still looking into the cause of fire that claimed the life of a 30-year-old Paterson man Saturday.

In a statement, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, Paterson Fire Chief Brian McDermott, and Paterson Police Chief Ibrahim Baycora confirmed that the fire at 187 North 1st was reported at approximately 1:42 p.m. Numerous people had to be evacuated from the two-family residence and nine residents were transported to Saint Joseph’s University Hospital for various injuries.

One resident, Andres Valdez, was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Two firefighters sustained minor injuries.
