PATERSON, NJ - A fire that escalated to four alarms destroyed a vacant home on Friday, but firefighters were able to keep most of the damage to the original building.
A large black column of smoke was seen from a distance as fire units responded to 149 Fair St. at about 9:00 AM. Once on scene firefighters found heavy fire venting out all openings on the second floor and through the roof of the vacant 2 ½ story frame dwelling. As firefighters attacked the flames from two elevated master streams and multiple handlines, the heat was melting the vinyl siding on two sides of the house, as well as an adjacent fence.
While firefighters were able to bring visible fire under control in about 90 minutes the home was destroyed and will be demolished.
One firefighter was transported to the hospital with a minor injury.\
