PATERSON, NJ - An investigation by members of the Paterson Police Department’s Street Crime Unit yielded two arrests and the recovery of two handguns Wednesday, Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale announced.
According to Speziale, Detectives Yamil Pimienta and Mohammad Bashir were in the area of 21st Avenue and Madison Street at approximately 9:50 p.m. when they observed four males, one in a full face mask, near a vehicle and “acting suspiciously” next to a gas station located at that intersection.
As the Detectives exited their vehicle and approached the males to investigate further, two of the men fled in a vehicle while the other two fled on foot, with Pimienta and Bashir in pursuit, also on foot.
During the course of the foot pursuit, one of the individuals, identified as Jonathan Santiago-Velez, 32, Paterson, removed a firearm from his waistband and threw it onto the roof of a business in the 100 block of 20th Avenue. The other suspect, identified as Leondre Caldwell, 22, also discarded a firearm on Madison Street while being pursued.
Both men were apprehended and charged with weapons offenses while both firearms were recovered and will be submitted to the New Jersey State Police Ballistics for further examination.
