PATERSON, NJ - An alert driver helped “combat violence” by assisting Paterson police in taking a loaded gun off the the street on Saturday, Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale said.

According to Speziale the driver told police that while traveling slowly in the area of Madison Street at approximately 1:22 a.m. the vehicle ran something over.

Upon exiting the vehicle to inspect the object the driver reported discovering a blue cloth which contained a Glock 26 with an extended  magazine and 11 live rounds.

Responding officers recovered the weapon and launched an investigation into its origin.
