PATERSON, NJ - After battling a large pre-dawn fire in which two residents had to be roused from their sleep by firefighters to escape the flames, the Paterson Fire Department was back out in force at about 5:00 p.m. to knock back a blaze at 85 Temple Street, just over a block away from the Northside Firehouse.
According to reports, firefighters arrived on the scene quickly and found a working basement fire in the 2 ½ story multi-family frame dwelling. Flames eventually broke through the initial structure and spread to second home less than three feet away. An additional response was called for as heavy fire took possession of the rear of both buildings.
Two elevated master streams, one deck gun and numerous handlines were put into operation to stop the further spread of the flames and additional firefighters were called in to assist with manpower. While the heavy fire was knocked down by 7:00 p.m. operations continued due to the stability of the buildings.
One firefighter was transported to the hospital with heat exhaustion. The cause is under investigation.
