PATERSON, NJ - Two members of the Paterson Police Department apprehended a 16-year-old boy carrying a loaded semi-automatic handgun, as well as 50 glassines of suspected heroin, officials announced Friday.

According to Paterson Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale the arrest was made by Detectives John Farfan and Luis Roca when they were on patrol at approximately 7:00 p.m. Thursday as part of the Street Crimes Unit. While in the area of North Main and Arch Streets, the report read, the detectives observed a group of individuals congregating near the intersection.

As the Detectives exited their vehicle to disperse the group, the suspect allegedly attempted to walk away while concealing an in item in his clothing. The Detective apprehended the youth who was  transported to police headquarters before being transferred to Essex County Detention Center.

The gun, which contained a high capacity magazine and was loaded with hollow point bullets,  Speziale said, will be sent to a New Jersey State Police laboratory for further examination.
