PATERSON, NJ - Two observant police officers took a loaded weapon off Paterson’s streets on Sunday.
According to a statement by Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale the incident took place on E. 25th Street between Park Avenue and 15th Avenue, where there have been numerous Shotspotter activations over the past week and where multiple victims have suffered gunshot wounds.
The statement reads that Officers J. Dabal and M. Bashir were patrolling in a marked unit when they saw a group of males congregated in front of an abandoned property at 714 E. 25th Street. While the site is said to be secured the two noticed one man, later identified as Chevaughn Graham, behind the fence
Dabal and Bashir noted that Graham “appeared to panic and he began walking quickly to exit the gate and covered his waistband with his right hand.” With the officers now out of their vehicle Graham, walking with another man, later identified as Kaygan Rhule, continue to flee “at a fast pace” on foot.
When officers caught up to Rhule he is said to have put his hands up and declared that he was carrying marijuana. Graham began running up E. 25th Street towards Park Ave while holding his waistband causing Officer Dabal to run after him while Officer Bashir detained Mr. Rhule.
Graham eventually gave up the chase and, as he lowered himself to the ground, the report reads, “reached into his waistband and slid a White undershirt away from him.” Officer Dabal notice the shirt was concealing a weapon, later found to be a .22 caliber revolver loaded with seven rounds.
Both men were arrested with Rhule being charged with possession of marijuana and Graham being charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and for obstructing a governmental function.
