PATERSON, NJ - A tip off that a woman was allegedly transporting drugs to a location in Paterson led to an arrest and the confiscation of approximately $160,000 worth of heroin, Passaic County Richard Berdnik announced.
According to Berdnik, members of the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office’s Bureau of Narcotics received the information at approximately 7:52 p.m. Monday, leading to them to set up surveillance outside of Belmont Liquors, 146 Belmont Avenue. As they arrived detectives observed the vehicle, a white colored BMW at the location with a Hispanic female in the driver’s seat.
The suspect, later identified as Yakania Polanco, exited the vehicle carrying a large blue and white shopping bag. Asked what was inside the bag Polanco allegedly responded “something illegal,” prompting detectives to open it, revealing several vacuum sealed packages containing a white powder.
A further search revealed 2.406 kilograms of suspected heroin and fentanyl, as well as a scale and glassine envelopes commonly used to package the drug for sale.
Polanco was arrested, charged with several crimes related to the possession of, and intent to sell, the drugs, and transported to Passaic County Jail.
