FLORHAM PARK, NJ - 2.6 million New Jersey residents will be traveling during the Christmas and New Year holiday season according to AAA. The 2017 is projected to be the highest year-end travel volume on record.

AAA projections are for trips of 50 miles or more, so that family jaunt over the river and through the woods to Grandmother's house on the other side of town is not a part of the records.

Nationally, 107 million people are expected to travel this season. The year end season is defined as December 23 through January 1.

“More expensive gas prices aren’t swaying holiday travelers,” said Cathleen Lewis, director of public affairs and government relations for AAA Northeast. “In fact, across the board, travel has increased year-over-year for every major holiday weekend and the same is projected for the year-end holiday period. The strong economy and growing consumer confidence has fueled holiday travel all year long.”

More than 90% of all trips taken by New Jersey residents will be by car, 177,145 (6.7%) are expected to travel by air this season, a 4% increase over 2016. 83,957 people are expected to travel by bus or train this season as well.
