SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The 'wade' is over with the South Plainfield Community Pool set to open Saturday, August 15th and those looking to visit the new, state-of-the-art facility may do so beginning at 11 a.m..
"I am confident that when residents come and see the new pool they are going to be 'wowed,'" said Borough Administrator Glenn Cullen. "The South Plainfield Community Pool is going to be the best recreational facility in Central New Jersey and will enjoyed be South Plainfield residents for generations to come."
The new facility features a fully functional leisure pool complete with zero-depth entry, a tall dumping and spray water feature, a vortex/whirlpool feature, in-water seating around three sides, and an in-pool shade area. The 7-foot section now has wider and more regulated lap lanes as well as a multipurpose activity zone with two, 12-foot rock climbing walls and two slides, including the pre-existing tube slide and a new flume slide.
"The pool features 'zero-depth entry with a handicap ramp. As you continue into the pool there is a vortex with jets and, as you progress deeper into the three- and four-foot section there are sitting walls that will enable one to either bask in the sun or relax in the shade," said Cullen, noting that all the sun shades have been installed and the pool grounds will feature a 'beachy-theme.'
While the renovation project also called for a new, zero entry wading pool with both spray and water table-style features and a climbable play structure, this area, said Cullen, may not be open or fully functional when the facility officially reopens.
"We hope to have it open soon," he said, telling TAPinto South Plainfield last month that, due to the delay in reopening, the borough plans to extend the 2020 season. 'It is our intention to keep the South Plainfield Community Pool open beyond Labor Day.'
In addition to the pool renovations, the facility itself also received a major facelift with two new tetherball courts and a fully renovated pool house. Earlier this year, the interior space was reconfigured and an ADA-compliant family restroom, accessible off the pool deck, was constructed. The men's and women's washrooms have been flip flopped and expanded, both featuring ADA-compliant showers and additional changing stations, stalls and urinals along with automatic no-touch toilets, sinks, and hand dryers as well as baby-changing stations.
According to Cullen, non-essential projects, such as decorative fencing and the installation of both a storage shed and a new registration house off the back parking lot, will take place during the off-season. As a result, admission into the pool will remain through the pool house and patrons will be able to purchase daily pool passes at the door; no memberships will be sold this season.
