PISCATAWAY, NJ – Some Harold Place residents in Piscataway will soon see a change in their water supply service.

Under a new ordinance passed at Tuesday’s Township Council meeting, the owners of eight properties there that have long relied on individual wells for their water use will have 90 days to connect to new public water mains. The wells will be sealed off to prevent future use, said officials.

“The reason for the mandatory hookup is that there are at least two wells along the road that have become severely contaminated, posing a significant health risk,” explained township attorney, Raj Goomer.

“Pursuant to the law, because of the health hazard, we’re requiring all the houses along that road to hook up,” said Goomer. “The township itself is investing quite a bit of money to make sure a water line is installed on the street.”

However, the ordinance requires property owners to connect the lines from the house to the street themselves.

“Since we have no choice since you’re going to seal up our wells, who’s paying for that, and how do we go about doing it,” asked Mary B. Williams, one of the homeowners on the street who received a notice about the change in service.

It could be too costly for some homeowners to install the connections, so Goomer said he and township officials would look into providing a payment plan option to help spread out the expense.

He advised Williams and other affected residents to contact the mayor’s office for more information on the costs of installing the connector lines and the processes to follow.

Harold Place is located in the Arbor section of Piscataway by Arbor Intermediate School off West 7th Street.
