SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Councilman Robert Bengivenga Jr. is scheduled to meet with Conrail officials today to review the rail crossings and discuss possible repairs to the roadways.  According to Bengivenga he has spoken to Conrail a number of times over the past week. “Conrail has been eager to meet, and they seem interested in understanding what problems are taking place at the rail crossings and what they can do to rectify the situation,” said Bengivenga at Monday’s Borough Council meeting.

The Borough Council tabled a resolution Monday night regarding the Lehigh Valley Rail Crossings which are maintained by Conrail, after receiving communications from Conrail. “I want to thank Councilman Bengivenga for action to ensure our rail crossings are safer and better for the community,” said Councilwoman Faustini.

A number of residents in attendance read last week’s TAPinto exclusive  about Councilman Bengivenga’s request for Conrail to fix the rail crossings, and also inquired about quiet zones.

“It shows great testament to when a Councilmember reaches out and puts things in the paper then things happen,” said resident Karina Nagy. “I think your effort has made a difference, perhaps a small one, but finally getting someone to look at the rail issue and I just need to emphasize again, if you are going to fix the rails you should look to make them compliant to be a quiet zone.”
