ELIZABETH, NJ - A Cranford woman can let out a slight sigh of relief now that she found her dog that was stolen along with her car yesterday morning at Newark International Liberty Airport.
Jude Zimmerman, the dog’s owner, said her 12-year-old Jack Russell Terrier named Jack Jack was found at Sun Deli on Madison Avenue in Elizabeth this afternoon. She said the deli’s owner took good care of him, but had no additional information.
“Someone said there was a lead on the Union County lost and found pets Facebook page,” Zimmerman said, referring to her dog. “Someone called me and said [the dog] might be at this deli."
But Zimmerman’s 2017 440i BMW blue convertible is still missing. Authorities said a suspect drove off with Zimmerman’s car with the dog in it around 6:30 a.m. yesterday while it was idling by a curb at door No. 5 at Terminal C.
Zimmerman said she was at the airport to pick up her 23-year-old son, who was coming home for a family member’s funeral. She got out of her car and left the driver-side door open to call out her son’s name. That’s when she says a man got out of a car and hopped into hers.
“I grabbed the door handle and I just screamed,” Zimmerman said. “It’s crazy. I’ve never seen anything like this my life.”
She described the suspect as a black male who was wearing a black du-rag and a red sweatshirt with a blue stripe on it.
The BMW had temporary New Jersey plates at the time it was stolen, police said. No arrests have been made and Port Authority police are still investigating.
