Edison Middle School Students Win $10K Team Grand Prize From Lockheed Martin

EDISON, NJ – Four district middle school students shared a $10,000 team grand prize from aerospace company Lockheed Martin for making a winning video about a trip to Mars as part of a national contest, district officials said.

Company representatives presented the $10,000 grand prize to Ujwal Linga, Siddhant Vashisht and Pramodh Miryalav, sixth-grade students at John Adams Middle School, and Aarav Zutshi, a sixth-grader at Woodrow Wilson Middle School during a joint assembly on June 6, district officials said during a recent Board of Education meeting.

Lockheed Martin started the Generations Beyond Video Challenge to generate interest among middle schoolers about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), according to the company.

The contest, which began early last August, was open to middle school students in grades 6-8 and helped launch a space travel centered curriculum sponsored by the company.

The money is split between team members and the winning team is set to tour NASA and the Kennedy Space Center to share their thoughts later this year, according to the competition’s website.

To participate in the contest, students had to create a 1-2-minute video showing a living area on a spaceship that the students created.

The video also had to include a model of a “habituation module.”

According to the Lockheed Martin, the habituation module would be designed for the Orion spaceship.

Orion is the first spaceship NASA is designing to travel to Mars.

The module would have to last for the estimated six-month trip to the red planet that NASA is scheduling.

The module had to include living quarters, a research lab, and six months’ worth of supplies, according to district officials.

Science and communications experts judged the videos during the contest, according to the competition’s website.

A new contest is scheduled to begin next month.
